Using Exercise to Build Connections

Whether walking, lifting weights, practicing pilates or swimming, exercise is an excellent way to engage with others and build connections. Moving your body can boost your self-esteem, making talking to people in other areas of your life easier. More directly, exercising in a group can be a great way to meet new people, try new activities and form bonds as you strive toward a healthier life.

Here are a few ways to use exercise to build connections with others:

  • Join a group fitness class or group. When you commit to a group, you interact with the same people on a regular schedule. This can make building friendships with those individuals easier as time goes on. Working out together can ease awkwardness as you encourage each other to meet your goals.

  • Participate in charity runs. Charity runs, 5Ks and other fitness events are fantastic ways to meet people with similar interests while supporting a cause. Consider visiting your local library or searching online to find events near you. You can participate with a friend to deepen your friendship or connect with others by yourself.

  • Work out with your partner or friend. Exercising isn’t just great for meeting new people. You can strengthen your current relationships by attending the gym or at-home workouts together. Exercising together will bring you closer, and you may find it motivating, allowing you both to get more out of your session.

  • Engage in online workout communities. Depending on where you live, joining a fitness group may be challenging. If you can’t participate in person, consider engaging in at-home workouts through YouTube. Once you find a program you like, you can connect with others in the comment section to encourage each other and share your experience.

No matter how you work out, moving your body can greatly benefit your health, physically and emotionally. You can start today by taking a walk with your partner or simply calling a friend and catching up while you move.
